Ben Folds and his piano. That’s all that was needed to turn the Thebarton Theatre into something truly magical on 24 February 2026.

Returning to what felt like a spiritual home, Folds delivered an intimate, story-rich performance that felt more like a conversation than a concert. The audience hung on every word as he reflected on his deep connection to Adelaide, sharing personal stories and the inspirations behind many of his songs. There was a warmth and familiarity in the room that made the night feel deeply personal.

The recently reopened ‘Thebbie’ was filled to capacity when opening act Lindsey Kraft took the stage, seated behind an enormous grand piano. Kraft, who has an extensive background in television and film, is still fairly new to live music performances. According to Folds, she only started playing piano four years ago. Yet her confidence, humour, and storytelling through song made her a perfect prelude to the main event.

Then came Folds, pounding the keys, commanding the room, and turning the audience into a choir of appreciative participants. Alongside beloved classics like Gracie, Still Fighting, Annie Waits, Zak and Sarah, and You Don’t Know Me, he shared lesser-known pieces, including a beautiful piano composition written when he was just ten years old, and a hilariously absurd teenage song titled Having Two Dicks Is Cool.

The encore; Landed, Army, and The Luckiest was the perfect close to a night filled with music, memory, and connection. It felt like more than a concert. It felt like Adelaide’s luckiest audience, sharing a moment with an artist who truly belongs here. 🎹
