Diesel – By Request
“When the audience writes the setlist and a master brings it to life.”
Diesel – By Request at the Dunstan Playhouse was everything a live music experience should be: intimate, generous, and utterly masterful. Before a note was played, Diesel invited fans to submit song requests, and throughout the night he honoured them with warmth and gratitude, calling out the names of the audience members who had chosen each track. It instantly created a sense of connection, as though the theatre had transformed into a cosy living room and we were all guests on his lounge.
Spanning favourites from an extraordinary 17‑album career, the setlist was a powerful reminder of Diesel’s enduring influence on Australian music. Each song was delivered with effortless precision, his musicianship nothing short of genius. Whether on guitar or vocals, Diesel commands the stage with a rare blend of technical brilliance and raw soul. He also teased that his 18th album is on the way, a tantalising prospect given the timeless quality of his existing catalogue.
Between songs, Diesel’s humour and easy charm shone just as brightly as his music. His relaxed banter and storytelling made the night feel personal and unscripted, reinforcing the sense that this was a once‑off experience rather than a standard concert.
An added highlight was the appearance of his niece, Voh Rox, who joined him for two songs. An astonishing talent in her own right, Voh Rox is a captivating vocalist with power, control and emotional depth well beyond her years. Their obvious unique bond was evident on stage, whether they were exchanging smiles, harmonising seamlessly, or sharing playful banter, the connection between uncle and niece added warmth and authenticity to the performance. Her performances elevated the show even further, making an already exceptional night feel truly special.
