“A Journey through America’s beauty, unease and silence”
The world Premier of Manifest Destiny presents itself not merely as an exhibition, but as a carefully constructed experience, one that unfolds as a journey through America rather than a sequence of images. Over the course of three years and three journeys, South Australian artist Alex Frayne created an extensive collection of 300 photographs that depict both the harshness and allure of Nevada’s streets and the surrounding landscapes. These photographs are intriguing yet tinged with sadness, balancing quiet observation with an underlying sense of unease.
The exhibition’s strength lies in its atmosphere. Frayne’s images do not exist in isolation; they are enveloped by light and colour that render the space simultaneously open and claustrophobic. This tension reinforces the exhibition’s central themes, where good and bad merge into something both haunting and eye‑opening. The viewer is invited to feel trapped, caught between understanding and uncertainty, familiarity and distance.
The soundtrack by Donnie Sloan (Empire of the Sun) adds another layer to the emotional atmosphere, with his signature style creating a soothing yet unforgettable mood throughout the exhibition. The sound does not dominate but instead shapes the rhythm of the viewing experience, heightening reflection and slowing the pace. Silence, both literal and figurative, becomes meaningful. The quiet of the audience signals attention, interest, and a willingness to engage beyond frames and quotes.
Manifest Destiny envelops viewers in an evocative journey, where light, sound, and silence converge to blur the boundaries between beauty, unease, and introspective discovery.
