The Ex Files: A Comedy True Crime Tour – Matt Bell
2 October 2026, Melbourne CDB.
‘Every ex leaves a trail. Great dates. An unsolved crime. Classic Melbourne.’
Matt Bell s The Ex Files is one of Melbourne Fringe’s most inventive offerings, a comedy true crime hybrid that trades the theatre for the streets of the CBD and turns the city itself into a living stage. Equipped with noise cancelling headphones, the audience is guided (and encouraged to dance to a killer soundtrack) through laneways and corners while Bell delivers a fast, funny, sharply structured narrative that feels part stand up, part mystery tour, and part urban adventure.
The headphones create an immersive bubble, and Bell begins with a clear safety reminder essential when you’re wandering the city while sealed off from ambient noise. Throughout the tour he’s impressively attentive, frequently checking that he hasn’t lost anyone in the group. It’s a small detail, but it adds a layer of reassurance and warmth that fits perfectly with his likeable, quick‑witted presence.
Bell’s storytelling blends queer humour, personal history, and true crime tropes with ease. The roaming format adds momentum, making each stop feel like a new chapter in an unfolding case file. He warns early that he walks at a “fast (gay man) pace,” and he’s not exaggerating, there’s a decent amount of walking, so those with injuries or lower fitness levels should be mindful. Still, the movement enhances the experience, giving the show a sense of discovery you simply don’t get in a traditional venue.
The Ex Files earns its 4.5 stars for originality, charm, and execution. It’s funny, immersive, and genuinely different, a Fringe highlight that turns Melbourne into a a playground for storytelling.
The Ex Files: A Comedy True Crime Tour continues until 10 October 2026
