Jason Derulo – THE LAST DANCE WORLD TOUR
Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne
Jason Derulo’s performance at Rod Laver Arena on Monday night was, in a word, joyous. From the moment the show burst open, the crowd was met with exciting, colourful, and often delightfully skimpy costumes, tantalising choreography and constantly shifting sets and lighting. The energy lifted even higher when fans realised they were celebrating Derulo’s 37th birthday with him. There was cake. Melbourne was thrilled.
Rarely does an arena stay on its feet for an entire show, but this crowd did. Derulo’s dance‑heavy performance had thousands boogieing from start to finish. There was simply too much happening musically, visually, physically for anyone to sit down. Every beat, every costume change, every lighting shift kept the momentum surging.
The story arc, however, left many scratching their heads. The audience was taken from a laboratory to a Phantom style alter ego, through an electrocuted “rebirth”, then into jungles, velvet rooms, volcanoes and other curious worlds. But with the dancers firing at full power and nostalgia pumping through the speakers, the slightly bizarre storyline projected onto the side screens became more of a quirky backdrop than a focal point.
Vocally, Derulo impressed. His high notes pierced through the spectacle and every time he unleashed that iconic “Jaaason Deruloooo,” the crowd erupted with pure, giddy delight.
The night was sexy, colourful, high‑energy and overflowing with uncomplicated joy. Jason Durulo blasted Melbourne into the night supercharged, breathless, and vibrating with joy.
There are concerts where you appreciate the music, concerts where you admire the production, and concerts where you leave feeling like you’ve actually experienced something. Jason Derulo gave us the latter. And for a couple of hours, Melbourne happily forgot about everything else and just had fun. Onya JaSoN DeRuLo
